Expressfly pilot and designer Richard Boyd , has agreed with expressfly to produce his designed SUK-31 .
The Suk will be released shortly and will be sold only through expressfly .
The Suk is constructed using Extrupor and is CNC machine cut for a precision build . The Suk is a highly aerobatic indoor plane and Richard designed this plane with aeromusical flying in mind.
We will be offering the SUK as a white only plane , this will let the proud owner personalise the plane to their own colours .

I got a few DS-Birdy’s from Andreas Decker, to test on the slopes of the Emerald Isle. To help with the building, I did a quick translation of the funny words.

Test pilot of choice is of course Richard. (If you like a Birdy of your own, give him a shout!)

And an example of a Birdy-DS in action…

Click here to view the embedded video.

Birdy-DS building instructions

I found a good series of pics that go with the building of this nice little bird on :

http://www.rc-network.de/forum/showthread.php?t=161530

This appears to be more or less the official thread for the build, as there are no images in the official manual.

The translation is interspersed with my own experience and observations. I suggest you read the lot before gluing the first bits. Try to understand what is suggested, rather than blindly following the sequence.

A very important point: DO look at your radio-gear, and make sure all the bits will fit. You don’t have a lot of room to play with! (Saying that, I used a Spektrum 6100 RX, and 2 DS47′s and a 2 cell lipo, and still had space to spare in the fuse.)

You can download the pdf here: DS building instructions.

Expressfly kindly supplied me with a New Blaster 2 lite DLG glider.

The Blaster 2 Lite is a rudderless lite version of my old Blaster 2 plus the aileron servos are now installed in the pod rather than the wing!

Instructions were not yet in circulation so it was an assembly of experience.

First of I assembled the wing to the Fus, via the 4 lightened screws from the kit.

Next was to install the aileron control horns,

Sand the control horns to give a secure glue bond

control horns fitted

I cut the control horn slots using a craft knife, please take care !!!!!! The wing are super fragile ! 20min epoxy was used for gluing.

control horns fitted

Next up was the tricky bit, THE ELEVATOR !

I did not want to use the carbon push rod supplied with the Blaster 2 Lite , instead I opted for a spring device on the elevator. This would save me some tail weight and save me alot of hassle securing the carbon push rod in the boom.

I called on Kees for his advice and this is what he came up with, good news is it works perfectly , I am very happy.

all moving elevator spring , for pull system

Once I had the spring in place it was time to mount the elevator,

This again is a tricky operation, I used laser levels to line the elevator to the wing. It really is worth taking time on this part of the build.

all moving elevator with spring pull system

all moving elevator with spring pull system

Now was time to install the radio gear and servos.

These are the items that I used.

Servos, 3 x LSX110 4.7g servos also known as dymond 4.7

Spektrum 6100E receiver, light but very capable receiver.

Expressfly 6V regulator, this helps with flight times with the added bounce of adding a little nose weight.

Flighttech Evo-lite 350mah 7.4v battery, used for my indoor planes it now gets summer use as well. I change the pack after 2.5 hours flying time. Superb !!!!!!!

I used fly fishing line and a fish/clip for the elevator pull system.

I made a small link line between the clip and the servo arm in case I ever need to adjust. Kees had a great way to test the tension on the elevator, simply he place 2 pound coins and the elevator, this made it slightly dip, tension was perfect.

I then secured the rudderless tail piece onto the boom, Vladimir has the boom notched out in the profile of the tail piece so it was a perfect fit and was perfectly aligned.

I set my radio as follows

3 degrees down flaps for cruise flight, I use this also in a strong thermal

7 degrees down flaps for Light low level thermal

Level under wing section for penetration / speed flight.

For launch I add 2 degrees up flaps , I use no elevator for this.

Full down flaps are used for land, a little down elevator is mixed to give you a super slow approach, This needs to be played about with to obtain perfection.

Transmitter expo,

I use 75% expo on my ailerons,

60% expo on elevator

It is plus for My Spectrum DX7 and minus if your using Futaba !

My CG was set at 96mm from the center of the leading edge, This is along way back and should only be used when you have had experience on a Blaster, normally 85mm is best.

My Blaster weights 262g empty and 288 with the battery !

I test flew the Blaster on Saturday at the flat field comp in Banbridge,

I had 10 min flights in 13mph winds, hard work but well worth it 1

Launch heights are greatly improved over my Blaster 2 but the lack of no rudder is going to take a little time to get used too.

All in all I am very very happy with this affordable high class DLG.

Roll on those warm summer days !

DL50 HAND LAUNCH GLIDER
Expressfly recently acquired the first batch of Mountain Models DL50 Gliders. The order was pre sold due to the high interest in this fun , yet intermediate competion model. Expressfly pilots have enjoyed the experiance of building and flying the DL50 , so much so that we have placed a new order and now will be selling the DL50 to the wider public. Flying the DL50 glider is so thrilling and rewarding , we fly in a variaty of places and this is really the secret about the DL50. Flying the DL50 at our flying site , we were getting 2-4 minutes in the air(this is winter flying) summer time brings termals and flight times increase. On a small slope (embankment type) times are as long as you like ! Great fun !

I was honored to be invited to the 2009 Lithuanian Open F3P Competition. The venue for the event was a fantastic sports centre in the town of Kaslu Roda, situated about 120Km from the capital city of Vilnius.
Snow was on the ground and temperatures were -10 degrees C, so it was a change from our milder temperatures at home in Northern Ireland.
From leaving my home in Dungannon it took me 9 hour to reach Vilnius. On arrival my friend Donatas was waiting and it was off to his home and a bite to eat and then to the Friday night indoor flying.
These boys know how to enjoy their flying. I was very pleased to be flying one of the Worlds best indoor pilots planes, the Deluxe and SUltimate by Donatas Pauzuolis. This really was a very kind offer, as he also was flying the same planes in the competition and if I had a smashed, them Donatas was also out of the competition.

Saturday morning we left Donatas’s home in Vilnius and traveled 120KM to the competition venue. Flying started at so it was an early start.
On first impressions, I was amazed at the professional way in which this event was organized and also the standard of flying and equipment. The pilots had the best of the best equipment! FlightPower, Vytas motors, Hacker, AXI, Castle Creations, Dymond, Hitec and JR servos.

There was a mix of planes from the top manufactures plus some beautiful home designed planes. Saturday was a fantastic day for me as I really had no pressure and enjoyed the days flying of F3P-A schedules and also my favorite, The Aeromusical. We flew until 11pm Saturday!
I was greatly surprised to find out that I had placed 2nd in the Aeromusical and 3rd in the F3P-A schedules. I had spent 4 months preparing my AM and the judges seemed to like the music and flying.
Now the pressure was really on! All the competitors stayed at the local Hotel and what a night of fun we had.
Sunday was finals day. Flying started at 10am.

The cameras were in place from Lithuanians top broadcasting company, (the news report can be viewed here, you need to FastForward a bit.)

I didn’t fly as well on the final day as I would have wished for , but I was still very pleased . I returned to Northern Ireland after 5 days in Lithuania a very proud man.
The Federation of Aero modelers Lithuania have invited me to there National Competition weekend 2009 plus next years 2010 indoor F3P Championships.

I really am looking forward to returning to Lithuania.
